The backcountry archery elk hunt of a lifetime is calling—but are you ready? After countless seasons in the mountains and input from experienced hunters, we’ve narrowed it down to 11 essential items that can make the difference between a legendary hunt and a miserable one. Here's our list not in any particular order.

  1. Quick Fix Kit
Be prepared to have to fix something, including yourself.  Super glue, duct tape, parachord, allen wrench set, spare release, and a good first aid kit can literally be a life saver.
  2. Quality Hunting Boots, Socks and Insoles
Your feet carry you through miles of unforgiving terrain. That’s why a premium CRISPI® hunting boot—paired with Merino wool socks for cushioning and supportive insoles—is critical to preventing blisters and fatigue that can end a hunt early.
  3. Reliable Optics
Elk country demands precision and patience. A quality rangefinder with angle compensation can mean the difference between a perfect shot and a wounded animal. Quality binoculars and a spotting scope are a must. Most often, you will spend hours behind the glass looking for elk and judging the size of the bulls before you make your play.
  4. Sharp Broadheads
When the moment of truth arrives, there’s no substitute for razor-sharp, proven broadheads. Test them extensively before your hunt.
  5. Weather-Resistant Outer Shell
Mountain weather changes fast. A breathable, waterproof shell keeps you in the field when others head for camp.
  6. High-Quality Headlamp
With Extra Batteries Early mornings and late tracking sessions demand reliable light. Pack backup batteries and consider a secondary light source.
  7. Game Processing Kit
Sharp knives, bone saw, gloves, a small tarp and game bags. Being prepared for success means having the tools to handle a downed elk properly.
  8. Emergency Communication Device
Satellite communicator or PLB for true backcountry hunts. Your safety net when cell service disappears.
  9. Lightweight Shelter System
Bivy, ultralight tent, or tarp setup for unexpected overnights or weather delays. The mountains don’t follow your schedule.
  10. Premium Base Layers
The foundation of your layering system. Merino wool or synthetic blends that wick moisture and regulate temperature during those grueling climbs and long sits.
  11. Water Purification System
Clean water is non-negotiable. Lightweight purification tablets or a reliable filter system keeps you hydrated and healthy.

There’s something primal and innate within us that pulls us into the wild—to chase bugling bulls deep in the backcountry with a bow in hand. The physical demands and mental highs and lows of elk hunting are challenges we return to, season after season. Here’s to crisp mornings, wild places, and chasing your dream bull. Be safe, and enjoy the fall.

Feet are weird! The human foot is made up of three arches, twenty different muscles, 24 ligaments, 26 bones, and 33 joints. The bones in your two feet contain one-quarter of ALL the bones in your body. Most Podiatrists recognize five distinct foot shapes, and some anthropologists and genealogists believe the shape of a person's feet can provide insight into their ancestral origins.
